Yes, a portable power station can often run a CPAP overnight. The catch is that “overnight” is not one fixed number. A low-watt setup with humidifier off is a very different load than a machine using heated humidity for eight or nine hours.
This is a planning guide, not medical advice. If missing CPAP therapy is a serious health risk for you, check the backup plan with your equipment provider or clinician.
The quick overnight test
A useful first check is:
machine watts x hours asleep = overnight watt-hours
Then add margin for inverter losses and reserve. If the machine averages 45W for 8 hours, the base load is 360Wh. A 500Wh power station might be in range, but it is not a guarantee because usable capacity can be lower than the label.
Run your numbers in the CPAP power station runtime calculator. It lets you compare humidifier settings, hours per night, and usable battery percent without pretending every setup is identical.
Why some people get much less runtime
The common runtime killers are:
- Heated humidifier use.
- Heated tubing.
- Running through AC instead of a compatible DC cable.
- A battery with less usable capacity than expected.
- Cold conditions, old batteries, or extra devices plugged in.
If you are buying specifically for sleep, do not rely on a product photo showing a CPAP next to a battery. Look for watt-hours, output type, noise, display brightness, and the manufacturer’s runtime assumptions.
What size is usually worth comparing?
For a single overnight CPAP backup, many shoppers start around the 500Wh class because it gives more margin than very small stations. A 300Wh class unit can still make sense for light draw and humidifier-off use, but it is easier to run out of room. A 1000Wh class unit is worth comparing if you want multiple nights, humidifier use, or shared outage loads.
If the station also needs to handle a router, lights, phones, or a fan, use the outage backup load planner to size the whole setup.

Verification notes
The most useful real-world check is a plug-in watt meter or a documented power reading for your exact machine and settings. If you cannot measure it, size with extra margin and assume heated comfort features reduce runtime.
Claims to double-check
Double-check any listing that says a power station runs “medical devices” or “CPAP for days” without naming the load, settings, and output path. Those claims are too vague for a purchase decision.
